Ask the Architect

Picture
Not sure you're getting the right answers from your local prop shop on what style or pitch propeller to use?  Our Naval Architects have a minimum 20 years experience and a Master's Degree or better.   We'll steer you in the right direction.
Q:  What kind of information does your Naval Architect provide?
A:  We provide a 4-page report detailing our findings and recommendations.  We will compare the estimated performance of two different propeller sizes or styles if desired.   A sample report can be found at the link below...

Q:  Why is your process better than calling any other prop manufacturer and asking for a sizing?

A:  Two reasons:  First, our Naval Architects are independent contractors and have NO CONTACT with our sales people.  They have no incentive to steer you into a more expensive style or size.  Secondly,  Their decades of experience with the latest fluid-dynamics software enables them to better judge the various trade-offs of different designs without being influenced by marketing hype or sales goals.

Q:  Sounds Expensive.  How much does this service cost?

A:  $129 gets you a thorough prop analysis by a Naval Architect.  This amount is credited toward your next ZZ-Prop Purchase within 90 days..

Q:  Do you offer Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis?
A:  Yes, But this requires considerably more information on your hull design and runs between $800 - $1200.

Naval Architect Propulsion Analysis Form

STEP 1:  Complete the form below with information on your vessel and the propeller change you are considering.

    VESSEL INFORMATION
Do not include Bow Pulpit or swim platform.
Enter the maximum propeller size that will provide adequate clearance, OR the maximum propeller size you desire to be considered for this evaluation.
    PROPULSION SYSTEM
Enter the fuel rate in gallons/hr consumed by each engine when at wide open throttle. This value should be in your vessel or engine manual.
    DESIRED PROPELLER
Indicate at what speed you wish to operate for most cruising situations.
Enter the % of full rated HP for which you wish the propeller analysis performed. The default is 100% but some customers may select 95% or 90% to have additional headroom for marine growth, additional weight, or other factors that may demand more power over time.
This value must be exact to .001 revolutions. We highly recommend reading the value directly from the label on the transmission. Enter the value as a ratio, such as 1.533 : 1.
Fully loaded weight should include full fuel tanks, full water tanks, plus a full complement of passengers and gear.
Measurement from the waterline to the center of the propeller in inches.
What is the fastest speed you believe this vessel can achieve with the current propulsion system?
Enter the % of the engine rating RPM for which you wish the propeller analysis performed. The default is 100% but some customers may select 95% or 90% to reflect different usage profiles. Contact your ZZProp representative if you have questions.
